Apple passkey: iCloud Keychain, and using passkeys with Android
SHORT ANSWER
What is an Apple passkey?
An Apple passkey is a passkey saved in iCloud Keychain on your iPhone, iPad or Mac. It syncs between your Apple devices and is unlocked with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode. It does not move into an Android passkey app, but you can sign in from other devices using a QR code.
Key takeaways
- Apple passkeys live in iCloud Keychain and sync across your Apple devices.
- There is no simple way to move them into an Android provider. Add a new passkey instead.
- You can sign in on a PC or Android phone by scanning a QR code with your iPhone.
- Mixed Apple and Android users should expect to hold separate passkeys per platform.
Disclosure: HostSpica makes HostSpica Identity, an Android app that is also a passkey provider. Facts about other services come from their own help pages, checked on 4 October 2026, and can change.
What Apple does
Apple's help describes passkeys that you create and save on your device to replace passwords on supported sites and apps. They are stored in iCloud Keychain, so they appear on your other Apple devices signed in to the same Apple Account.
Apple to Android: what is and is not possible
| Goal | Possible? | How |
|---|---|---|
| Move an Apple passkey into HostSpica Identity | No | Create a new passkey on the Android phone for each site |
| Sign in on an Android phone with an iPhone passkey | Yes | Choose the iPhone option on the site and scan the QR code with the iPhone |
| Sign in on a PC with an iPhone passkey | Yes | Scan the QR code with the iPhone |
| Keep both platforms in sync | Not by default | Use a manager that syncs across platforms, or hold a passkey on each |
If you switch from iPhone to Android
- Before you leave, sign in to each important account and add a second sign-in method.
- On the Android phone, sign in another way and create a new passkey for each account.
- Keep the Apple device until you have checked every account.
HostSpica Identity is an Android app, with no sync and no import, so it starts empty. HostSpica Identity needs Android 14 or newer for passkeys. Its Google Play release is in the final steps as of 4 October 2026, so check the app page for the live link.
