In short
Each week you compete in a group by the number of levels you clear. When the week ends, the top 20% move up a league and the bottom 15% move down. There are 16 leagues, from Bronze 3 (groups of 50) to Master (groups of 15,000).

Real players always fill groups first. While the game is new, groups are topped up with computer-controlled players so every league feels alive. Their scores grow through the week, and higher leagues have stronger ones. They are removed as more real players join.
Tap the league chip on the home screen. The This week tab shows your group with the promotion zone in green and the demotion zone in red; the All ranks tab shows every league and where you are. Leagues need an internet connection.
